Beretta 92 Information

The pistol is an improved version of model 951 Brigadier and forms the basis for all the other 92 models which have been developed since than. It has a falling-block locking based on the well-known Walther P38 pistol. It is a double-action weapon, with an automatic firing pin safety. The extractor also serves as a cartridge indicator. The original double-action 92 dating from 1976 was introduced in 9mm Para caliber with a magazine capacity of 15 rounds. The safety catch is on the left at the back of the frame. The weapon has a total length of 217mm (8 ½ in), barrel a length of 125 mm 5(in) and weight of 950g (33 ½ oz). About 5,000 Beretta Model 92 pistols were produced. The model proved to be highly successful design and the forerunner of many successful variants.

Beretta 92 S

Beretta 92 is a well known series of semi-automatic handguns manufactured in Italy yet marketed all over the United States. The design of Beretta 92 came in 1972 and then several other variants began to emerge. The innovation in design and its operation made the United States Armed Forces look forward to replacing the 1911 model with this. The 1911 handguns were then chambered to fire.45 ACP cartridge. Beretta 92 series was chambered for the high quality calibre 9mm. Design for Beretta 92 standard remained almost similar to the early models of M1922. There is an open slide, block barrel, front sight integrated and improved magazine. The advancement in magazine is perhaps the best feature of the even succeeding models of Beretta 92. There is no feed ramp from the magazine, pushing the bullets, instead there is a direct feeding and double stacking of the bullets ready for fire is a unique design in Beretta pistols. The 92s is a compact model with more emphasis on the requirements of law enforcement firms. This is aversion of Model 92 with combined safety catch/uncocking lever on the left of the slide. When it is used, this catch pushes the firing pin out of each of the hammer and breaks the connection between the trigger and the sear. For the rest, the measurements are the same as those of the older model 92. Total length of 217mm (8 ½ in), barrel a length of 125 mm 5(in) and weight of 950g (33 ½ oz).

Beretta 92F

After concluding the weapon tests of the US Army, the JSSAP (Joint Service Small Arms Program) wished to carry out a few modifications on the Beretta 92 SB. And the minor modifications of the "F" versions were later included in the standard issue pistol as it evolved during US trials. These included an angular trigger guard and a slightly rounded front of the grip. In addition, they wanted a modification to the base plate of the magazine, a different grip and a different lanyard ring. The pistol has a combined ambidextrous safety catch/uncocking lever on the slide. It has a two-part firing pin of which the back half is pushed out of reach of the hammer. In addition, the inside of the barrel is chrome coated and the pistol was given a teflon protective layer know as Bruniton. This new version of the pistol was called Beretta 92F and was used by the US Army in 1985 as Pistol 9mm M9. At least 500,000 were produced. In 1990, this model was succeeded by the 92FS.

Beretta 92FS

Model 92 FS was introduced in 1990 to succeed the 92F. In some American M9 army pistols, small tears had been discovered in the slide after a period of time. This meant that the slide could separate from the frame when the pistol was fired. A few minor modifications were made to improve this. The hammer axis and the guide rails in the slide were extended. In this way, the slide is blocked during the repeat action by the extended hammer axis, at the end of moving back. FS models also have an automatic firing pin safety, a divided firing pin and an ambidextrous safety catch/uncocking lever. The FS modification is available for models 92 and 92 Inox in 9mm Para caliber, as 98FS and 98FS Inox in,9x21 mm caliber as 92 Brigadier FS and Brigadier FS Inox, 92 FS Centurion, and finally as model 98 Brigadier FS.
